Week One Preview
BLAXEIGHT REPORT:
This week marks the start of interscholastic boys lacrosse competition in Nassau County. Over thirty-five games will be played this week, with many squads mixing in scrimmages as well. The opening game of the season is on Monday, March 20, with Herricks visiting Bethpage. The non-league contest is the first for new Golden Eagles Head Coach Patrick Gorman. Other games of interest this week include:
Bayport-Blue Point at Wantagh (Thursday, 3/23, 4:30 pm at Wantagh HS): One of the top seeded teams in Nassau Conference C/D, the Warriors never shy away from playing excellent non-league competition and return many of their key performers from last year. Visiting Bayport-Blue Point features several D-1 talents and may have one of their best squads in school history.
South Side at Syosset (Thursday, 3/23, 4:45 pm at Syosset HS): These two squads have played a non-league tilt for years and the games are usually barnburners. The last two seasons have been a split, with the Cyclones taking a 9-8 win last year and the Braves winning 15-14 in 2021. Both teams were Nassau finalists last season, South Side in Class C and Syosset in Class A. The Cynclones move up to Class B this year and look to challenge Garden City, while the Braves remain one of the traditional powers in Class A.
Huntington at Cold Spring Harbor (Friday, 3/24, 6:30 pm, Cold Spring Harbor HS): A great inter-county rivalry between cross-town schools in what you get when the Seahawks and Blue Devils face-off each season. CSH, the defending NYS Class D champion, graduated a bunch of seniors but feature Michigan-bound midfielder CJ Reilly, a do-it-all type of player. Huntington will counter with a great faceoff midfielder in Yale-bound Anthony Annunziata.
Lynbrook at Oceanside (Friday, 3/24, 7:00 pm, Oceanside HS): Both teams begin the 2023 season with new head coaches. The Owls are led by Bill Luzzi and the Sailors' new boss is Kevin Anderson. A player to watch in this one is Lynbrook's Michael Fagen, a Richmond commit.
Northport vs Port Washington (Saturday, 3/25, 10:00 am, Long Island University): This game is a rematch of last year's Class A Long Island Championship, which was won by Northport, 13-9. Both teams feature top talents in the Vikings midfielder Luke Meyer and the Tigers defenseman Andrew Miller.
Mt. Sinai at Garden City (Saturday, 3/25, 11:00 am, Garden City HS): The Trojans marched to the NYS Class B Championship last year finishing with 19-2 record. One of their two defeats was to Suffolk powerhouse Mt. Sinai, 8-5, a game that was featured on ESPN. Stevie Finnell and Cole Webber will lead the always-strong Trojans this spring. And while the Joey Spallina era is over for the Mustangs, his twin brothers, also Syracuse commits, return to lead the defending Suffolk Class C champions.
