Week Five Games To Watch
With conference play heating up, this week has many excellent matchups. Listed below are a few to keep an eye on, along with a couple of interesting non-league contests bookending the week.
Mineola at Lynbrook, Monday, April 17, 5:00 pm: A good non-league game between two Conference C/D teams looking to improve as the season continues. Mineola (4-3, 1-2 in C/D) features Michigan-bound Tommy Renner who has totaled 34 points this year. Lynbrook (3-3, 1-1) will counter with Michael Fagen, a Richmond commit with 16 points.
Syosset at Massapequa, Tuesday, April 18, 5:00 pm: The annual slugfest between two A Conference heavyweights. Massapequa (3-4, 2-0 in A) has played a difficult non-league schedule and is coming off a big win over Scarsdale of Section I. Syosset (4-3, 2-0) will always be in it with Zachary Finkelstein in goal and attack combo of Brody Waxer (30 points) and Adam Giovinco (26 points).
South Side at Roslyn, Tuesday, April 18, 5:00 pm: Roslyn is 5-0 and features Alex Gatto (Michigan) on attack. South Side (5-2, 2-0 in B) has moved up to Class B this year and was the pre-season #2 seed. The Cyclones are strong in goal with Tommy Gentile (Boston University) and at the faceoff with Michael Melkonian (Cornell).
Port Washington at Farmingdale, Wednesday, April 19, 6:30 pm: Another Conference A battle in week five. Last year, the Vikings won both matchups by a goal en-route to a Nassau Class A championship. The Dalers (5-3, 2-0 in A) feature Mike Ippoliti in goal (Syracuse) and CJ Mangio (Binghamton) at the faceoff. Port Washington has a great combo in Luke Meyer (28 points) a Richmond commit, and John McCarthy (12 goals) at midfield.
Cold Spring Harbor at Manhasset, Wednesday, April 19, 7:00 pm: Traditionally one of the top games in Nassau each year. Manhasset enters as the favorite and is ranked nationally in every media poll. The Seahawks (5-3, 2-0) are strong on the defensive end, allowing only 6.5 goals a game. They will be challenged by an Indians (6-0, 2-0) squad that is balanced and led by faceoff ace Cal Girard, a Duke commit who has won 86% of his draws this year.
Garden City at Calhoun, Friday, April 21, 5:00 pm: A rematch of last year's Nassau Class B championship game won by Garden City. Calhoun (7-1, 1-0 in B) is rolling with Jake Lewis (46 points) on attack and Peter Thomann (23 Caused Turnovers) on the defensive end. Garden City (5-3) has played in close games all year against top non-league competition and will rely on Stevie Finnell, a Duke-bound midfielder, to score goals.
Plainview JFK at Hicksville, Friday, April 21, 5:00 pm: A Confefence A matchup with important playoff implications. Hicksville (3-3, 0-2 in A) won last year, 11-9, and qualified for the six-team Class A playoff. The faceoff battle between the Comets Peter Agapito and Plainview's (4-4, 2-1) Gavin Lemere will be one to watch.
Cold Spring Harbor at Syosset, Friday, April 21, 7:00 pm: This non-league battle between neighboring towns is always a good one. Cold Spring Harbor has won eight of the last dozen matchups, including three in a row. Both teams feature strong defenses and top coaches. Dennis Bonn of CSH and John Calabria of Syosset have the most wins among active coaches in Nassau County entering the 2023 season.
