Class C Semifinal: South Side 9, Bethpage 7

Top seeded South Side (14-4) advances to the Nassau Class C championship game with a 9-7 victory over #4 Bethpage (10-8) at Hofstra. The Cyclones, Nassau champions last year in Class B, look to repeat as champs (in a different classification) when they take on the winner of Wantagh and Plainedge on Saturday, May 31st at 10:00 am at Hofstra.

South Side led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter on goals by sophomore John Hawthorne, assisted by senior Culen Lynch, and sophomore Luke Mullin. Bethpage 8th-grader Anthony Rapacki scored an unassisted goal in transition to cut the lead in half, but three more South Side goals brought the halftime lead to 5-1.

Junior Brendan Vedder opened the second half scoring for South Side with a goal off a pass from Lynch at the 11:08 mark. Charlie Abramo responded for the Golden Eagles, off a pass from Chase Solliday. Lynch scored unassisted at the 5:25 mark before James Lipetri scored for Bethpage and the score was 7-3. At the close of the quarter, Bethpage LSM Luke Waxer seemingly dodged every South Side defender before ringing his shot off the pipe. The rebound ended up in the stick of junior Colin Kenny, who scored unassisted with four seconds left in the quarter to give the Cyclones an 8-3 lead. It was Kenny's first goal of the season, and it proved to be the game-winner.

Bethpage was unfazed by the events of the close of the third and continued to rally in the fourth, outscoring South Side 4-1. The teams traded goals before Bethpage scored the game's final three goals, two off of losse ball situations in front of the South Side goal by Andrew Reinhardt and Abramo. Reinhardt found senior Tommy Lagan for an extra man goal that brough Bethpage within two at 9-7, but the Cyclones would close out the final seconds for the victory.

Luke Mullin finished with two goals as did junior attackman Jack Muscarella and John Hawthorne. Lynch led all scorers with a goal and two assists, and Vedder had one goal and an assist. Sophomore Jack Disarlo picked up the win in goal with 7 saves and sophomore Alec Notaro won 12 of 20 faceoffs. For Bethpage, junior goaltender Joey Traversa made 16 saves and sophomore Abramo and senior Lagan each scored twice.
