CSH Reclaims NYS Class D Title

After a back and forth early game, Cold Spring Harbor scored four of the last five goals to reclaim the NYS Class D Championship with an 11-9 win over Marcellus.  Coming into the matchup, the Seahawks had won three of the seven total Class D Championships with consecutive wins in 2022, 2023, and 2024, before failing to make the final last year. Overall, the contest was tied five times with both teams leading by two goals at different points during the game.  The late stretch in the fourth quarter was the difference maker that gave the Seahawks their 4th Class D title and eighth overall.

Marcellus scored the opening goal with an unassisted Christopher Doshna tally. Doshna finished with 4 goals and 2 assists in the contest and had a hand in of 6 of the 9 Mustang goals.  Less than minute later and the Seahawks opened their scoring.  Colby Koenigsberger assisted the first of his team leading 3 goals and 2 assists with in inside feed to Roy Testa.  Testa finished the game with 3 goals and 1 assist for CSH.  The Seahawks kept up the pressure with two more goals.  The second was a flip on the first goal with Testa assisting Koenigsberger followed by an unassisted goal by Andrew Ioannou.  The Mustangs finished out the scoring with their second goal.  Henry Lawrence (3 goals) scored off a feed from the goal line by Doshna.  Cold Spring Harbor led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.  Lawrence kept up the scoring in the second with an unassisted fast-break goal late in the second to tie the game for the second time at 3-3-3.  With 0:11 left in the half, Ioannou scored his second goal to give the Seahawks a 4-3 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter was almost all Marcellus.  The opener was scored by CSH with Koenigsberger assisting Dylan Reilly with a feed onto the crease.  However, Marcellus then responded with four back to back goals to end the quarter and take a two goal lead (7-5) going into the final quarter.  Scoring came from Doshna (2), Nick Rayfield (1) and Lawrence(1).  Doshna was demonstrative with strong single player efforts to score both his goals an assist the goal by Rayfield.

As much as the third belonged to Marcellus, the final quarter was clearly for Cold Spring Harbor.  The Seahawks led the quarter 6-2, including the four goal streak in the final five minutes to secure the win.  The quarter opened with back to back goals by Koenigsberger to tie the game at 7-7.  Rayfield scored his second goal for the Mustangs to pull back ahead 8-7; however, it only took 90 seconds for the scoring run to begin.  Testa (2), Reilly (1) and Ioannou (1) scored during the streak that put CSH up by the largest gap of the day (11-8).  Doshna added his final goal with 0:12 left on the clock to pull within two; however, it was enough for the Seahawks to hold on and secure the victory.
