Garden City Wins the 140th Woodstick Classic

In a low scoring affair Garden City defeated Manhasset, 7-2, in the 140th Woodstick Classic, the oldest public high school lacrosse rivalry in the United States. The Trojans (8-2) rugged defense led the way, holding the Manhasset offense to two goals, one in each half, en route to the victory. The game, this year part of Power League play, will certainly have seeding implications for the Nassau Class B playoffs which are a little less than a month away.
Garden City scored the first two goals, both unassisted and both from the strong left hand of senior attackman Andrew Ottomanelli (Holy Cross). Manhasset answered with a goal from Michael Mondiello (MIT) on a pass from Luca Petruccelli (Amherst) with nine seconds left in the first quarter.
Sophomore midfielder Charlie Koester had a hand in the next two Trojan tallies. At the 8:36 mark of the second, he scored unassisted. Just less than four minutes later he found Dan Mejdid on the crease and Garden City had a 4-1 that they would take into halftime. The Indians scored the only goal of the third quarter, with Petruccelli hammering home a low shot that cut the Garden City lead to 4-2.
But the Trojan defense would not succumb to the pressure. They were able to string together a few stops, and when faceoff specialist Luke Cascadden (Navy) scored off the draw to start the fourth quarter, the Garden City lead began to seem unsurmountable. Just over a minute after the Cascadden goal, Carson Kraus (Hamilton) scored unassisted to bring the lead to 6-2. On a night when the Garden City defense stood tallest, the last goal was perhaps the most emblamatic of their efforts. Defenseman Matt Kephart (Princeton) forced a turnover, sprinted downfield and fired a thirty yard pass to a cutting Kraus for the easy layup, making the final score 7-2 in favor of the Trojans.
